From May 4-6 the 15th Biennial Conference of the European Union Studies Association (EUSA) took place in Miami, Florida. The EUSA is the premier scholarly and professional association focusing on the European Union, the ongoing integration processes, and transatlantic relations.

The TransJudFare research project funded by the current Norface funding circle ‘Welfare State Futures’ addresses some of the EUSA core themes. It deals with two challenges for welfare states in the European Union (EU): the transnationalization of citizenship and welfare rights and the judicialization of politics.

At this year’s EUSA conference members of the Austrian, Danish, German and Dutch team presented their analyses and responses to those challenges, among them Dorte Sindbjerg Martinsen from the University of Copenhagen, member of the Danish TransJudFare Team. The presentation built upon her book An Ever More Powerful Court?: The Political Constraints of Legal Integration in the European Union which offers a careful theoretical and empirical examination of how the EU legislative process can influence and interact with CJEU decisions.

In a special ceremony Martinsen’s book which is said to have the potential of becoming a landmark in European policy research has been awarded the EUSA Best Book Award 2015-2016.
