The National Science Centre (Narodowe Centrum Nauki, NCN) is a government executive agency set up to fund basic research and supervised by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The NCN was officially opened on 4 March 2011 and since then it has launched 15 funding programmes. The National Science Centre is an agency which was long awaited by the Polish scientific community. Thanks to NCN, scientists are now able to decide independently on the allocation of 10 per cent of funds earmarked for science in the state budget and to chart a course for basic research.
