About Norface

New Opportunities for Research Funding Agency Co-operation in Europe (NORFACE) is a collaborative partnership of national research funding agencies from 18 European countries in the area of social and behavioral sciences.

NORFACE offers unique opportunities for participating funding agencies by developing common research funding instruments, thus creating opportunities for facilitating and building new networks of research collaboration in the social sciences.

Launched in January 2004, the NORFACE network is the result of a successful bid for funding to the European Commission 6th Framework Programme under the ERA-NET scheme. Since 2004 the NORFACE network has proved itself as a successful coordinated common action of currently eighteen national research funding agencies.

Over time NORFACE has been able to expand the scope of the joint research programmes by developing ERA-NET Cofund calls. The ERA-NET Cofund scheme provides European Commission top-up funding and enable the connection of the NORFACE programmes to various societal challenges of H2020 and generate added value through initiating cooperation with EU policies and activities. The ERA-NET Cofunds also facilitate the widening of participation of EU Member States or Associated States and support international cooperation (e.g. with Belmont Forum).

Major achievements up until now have been four transnational initiatives: three rounds of the NORFACE Seminar Series in 2005, 2006 and 2007, the pilot research programme “Re-emergence of Religion as a Social Force in Europe?” (€ M 5,4) in 2006, the transnational research programme “Migration in Europe – Social, Economic, Cultural and policy Dynamics” (M € 23 and M € 6 ERA-NET Plus) in 2008 and “Future of the Welfare States” (€ M 22) in 2013.

The NORFACE Network Board is currently developing two new research programmes: Dynamics of (In)equality during the Life Course (DIAL) and Transformations To Sustainability (T2S).
