Dutch Research Council (NWO) is the national research organisation of the Netherlands. NWO promotes quality by subsidising the best research proposals submitted by researchers, while also developing thematic activities where necessary. NWO is responsible for prioritising research topics and for setting up and implementing grant schemes. Its function as ‘the National Research Organisation’ in the Netherlands means that NWO also specifically promotes research for and on behalf of government ministries, in particular the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.

Social sciences and Humanities is one of the four NWO domains and funds research in the Social Sciences and Humanities. SSH allocates this funding by organising competitions for research proposals. Research proposals are selected through a rigorous peer review, with the emphasis on innovation and excellence.
